- ESI Scheme was first implemented in the State of J&K on 16.10.1989 covering about 7000 workers in 3 centers at Jammu, Kathua and Srinagar. At present the Scheme is implemented in the entire geographical area of 8 districts viz. Jammu,Kathua, Samba, Reasi, Udhampur, Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama.
- The Scheme is partially implemented in the municipal areas (District Hqrs.) of remaining 12 districts of the U.T of J&K namely Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Ramban & Kishtwar of Jammu Division and Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Barmulla & Kupwara Districts of Kashmir Division.
- The Scheme is extended to manufacturing establishments and 7 other class of non-manufacturing establishment like Shops, Hotels, Preview Theaters, newspaper Establishment, Road Motor Transport Undertakings, Educational Institution, Private Medical Institutions.
- As on date about 7140 factories/establishments are covered under the ESI Act in J&K the No. of Insured Persons in the U.T are about 1.36 lakh.
